5 Houseplants That Are Easy to Care For


Looking to spruce up your home with some beauty but don’t have a green thumb? That’s okay! There are plenty of lovely, low-maintenance houseplants that will continue to thrive even in the most unforgiving environments. Of course, you’ll want to consider how high maintenance a plant is, how much natural light your home has, and whether or not the plant could be potentially poisonous to any pets you may have in the home.

Snake Plant
Snake plants, also known as Saint George's sword and mother-in-law's tongue, are tough and sturdy; perfect for those who need more low-maintenance plants. These succulents grow well indoors and will be fine with indirect sunlight and little water, especially during the winter. In fact, it's better to let these plants dry out between waterings. Just pop them into a general purpose fertilizer and let them hang out!

  • Pro Tip: The Snake Plant is considered to be one of the highest oxygen producing plants and would be an excellent addition to any bedroom as studies show that higher oxygen levels promote deeper sleep. Plus, the snake plant is one of very few that continues to produce oxygen at night.

Money Plant
Chinese money plants are an excellent addition to any home, known for their beautiful, braided trunks and umbrella-shaped leaves. While it does thrive in natural light and warmth, this plant doesn’t need to be watered very often. Be sure to trim and cut any dead or dry leaves as you care for this plant. 

  • While these plants don’t actually grow currency (bummer!), they do have a reputation for bringing good luck and fortune to their caretakers! 

Spider Plant
With its long, narrow leaves, a spider plant will add a great pop to your living space. These plants can be placed in bright to moderate indirect light; don’t place them in direct sunlight as this can lead to brown tips. Once-a-week watering is sufficient in spring and summer, while you can allow the soil to dry out a bit more during the winter months. 

  • Studies have shown that spider plants can improve indoor air quality by absorbing harmful elements in the air.

Aloe Vera
A great addition to any kitchen, aloe vera is very easy to care for. Place these plants in bright, indirect sunlight or artificial light. The key to watering aloe vera plants is to water them deeply, but infrequently; the soil should feel moist after watering, but should be allowed to dry out to some extent before you water again. Plan to water your aloe plant about every 2-3 weeks in the spring and summer and even more sparingly during the fall and winter months

  • Aloe vera gel can be accessed by cutting an outer leaf close to the stem and then cutting the skin. If you burn yourself in the kitchen, aloe is great to have on hand for quick relief!

Monstera Plant
Also known as the “swiss cheese plant” due to their holy leaves, monstera plants thrive in bright to medium indirect light. Plan to water these plants every 1-2 weeks, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Monsteras can benefit from filtered water or water left out overnight before using.

  • Not only do these plants look cool, they’re very beneficial to have in the home. They can help to purify the air, reduce stress, and reduce odors!
